A resurgence of sorts happened with the coming of cable television, and we had path-breaking shows like Shanti and Tara. Sometime by the end of the decade kitsch entered in the shape of Ramayan and Mahabharat. You had stalwarts like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and Basu Chatterjee make fine works for television. Even close to 40 years later, I can still rattle off the days on which each was telecast: Karamchand on Mondays Hum Log and then Buniyaad on Tuesdays and Saturdays Khandan on Wednesdays Ados Pados on Thursdays Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi on Fridays. Many people I know would swear by the fact that the first of these represented the best of Indian television. Growing up in the 1980s, one of the many pleasures of a less cluttered and leisurely time was the birth of the TV series.
